Safety Precautions in Places for Kids to Play near Me
Playground or playhouses should be fun places for kids to play. But unfortunately, injuries occur on playgrounds as we don’t expect it. Parents, caregivers and children need to do everything possible to ensure that playtime is fun and no one gets hurt. Following playground safety rules is one of the best ways to make sure kids are able to enjoy the playground without incident.
1. Properly supervise the kids using playground equipment.
Actively supervise children on the playground. It won’t be hard since they’ll probably be calling for you to watch them climb, jump and swing. Kids must be taught that pushing, shoving or crowding while on the playground can be dangerous. And as parents, you need to check playgrounds where your children play. Look for hazards, such as rusted or broken equipment and dangerous surfaces. Report any hazards to the school or appropriate local office and most importantly let your kids dress appropriately for the playground. Remove necklaces, purses, scarves or clothing with drawstrings that can get caught on equipment and pose a strangulation hazard. Even helmets can be dangerous on a playground, so save those for bikes.
2. Ensure safe surfacing beneath
Guide your kids to avoid playgrounds with non-impact absorbing surfaces, such as asphalt, concrete, grass, dirt or gravel. There are places for kids to play that have recommended surface materials include: sand, pea gravel, wood chips, mulch and shredded rubber. Rubber mats, synthetic turf and other artificial materials are also safe surfaces and require less maintenance. For swings, make sure that the surfacing extends, in the back and front, twice the height of the suspending bar. So if the top of the swing set is 10 feet high, the surfacing should extend 20 feet.
3. Choose the right play area based on the child’s age
Make sure that your kids use age-appropriate playground equipment. Separate places for kids to play for children under 5 should be available and maintained. For babies who are learning to walk, the play area should have a smooth and easy surface to walk on.
4. Inspect if the playgrounds are maintained by qualified personnel.
As parents or guardians, you need to check with your school and child care center to make sure they have age-appropriate, well-maintained playground equipment. If there are any hazards in a public or backyard playground, report them immediately and do not allow children to use the equipment until it is safe. You can also report any playground safety hazards to the organization responsible for the site.
Parents should set clear safety rules for children and those who operate places for kids to play should also make clear that both adults and kids need to take reasonable active safety precautions, and adults need to engage in active supervision in order to avoid injury on the playground.
